YOUNG story writers will shortly see their work published in an anthology.

Lady Lumley's School in Pickering is putting together the booklet after running a competition open to pupils from each year group.

A prize for the best story was awarded to Kate Henson for her story ‘Syria Crisis – My Story’, described as a realistic and moving account of a child’s experience of the uprising in Syria.

Awards and certificates were also presented for each of the Key Stage 3 year groups.

The year group winners were as follows: Year 7 winner – Ellen Jeffreys, runner up – Luke Armstrong, Year 8 winner – William Vickers, runner up – Alex Skaife, Year 9 winner – Katie Henson and runner up – Jade Hughes.

Teaching assistant Paul Holbrook, who is himself an author, said the judging panel had been very impressed by all the students' work.

"There was some very good stories which showed great skill and imagination," he added.

"It is so important to encourage young people to express themselves through writing at this age and to get their ideas on paper."

All of the stories submitted will appear a Lady Lumley’s anthology, which will be produced in both printed and e-book formats and will be available later this year.
