PUPILS at Helmsley Primary School have been keeping up the spirit of the Tour de France with a series of related projects.

The school took part in a Grand Départ maths challenge, which was co-ordinated by North Yorkshire County Council and pupils from Years 4 to 6 took part in the workshop which aimed to make maths fun within a topical context.

Teacher Ryan Jacobs said: “Although the pupils perhaps weren’t that keen at the prospect of a maths afternoon at first, they found it really good fun and really enjoyed the challenge.” Continuing the Tour de France theme, the pupils developed their own play based on the history of cycling and how it was adapted to the modern day race.

“They performed the play to parents and it was very well received and enjoyed by the audience,” Mr Jacobs said.

“It also gave pupils who enjoy performing and that side of learning the chance to shine.”
