A man who stole a box of Lego worth more than £150 has been given a four-week custodial sentence.

Kevin Varley, of Wood Street, Norton, pleaded guilty to theft from the Malton WH Smith branch in October last year.

On Friday, Scarborough Magistrates’ Court was told that Varley was one of three people who stole the boxed Lego set worth £153.78.

Katy Varlow, prosecuting, told the court that 42-year-old Varley had 24 theft offences dating back to 2009.

The court also heard that Varley had been in breach of a crown court order when he was arrested for the theft of the Lego.

On January 9 this year, Varley had been given an eight-month sentence for matters of a similar nature at York Crown Court.

Scarborough magistrates ordered him to serve a further four weeks, which would run concurrently with his other sentence.

Damien Varley, 23, of Wood Street, Norton, was due to appear in court on Friday, but did not turn up and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He faces a charge of theft of Lego and an additional charge, from September last year, of possession of heroin in Norton.

Joel Dent, 22, of Nursery Way, Norton, elected to be dealt with at the crown court after reserving his pleas at his appearance last week at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court. He faces charges of theft of Lego and possession of heroin and cannabis at his home in September last year.

He is also facing a charge of possession with intent to supply after 520 diazepam tablets, a class C drug, were found in his house.

Mr Dent is due to appear at York Crown Court on Friday, January 31.
