SONGS themed around the First World War will entertain an audience at Scarborough Art Gallery on the evening of Friday, November 14.

Presented by the UK Foundation for Dance, Matt Stradling, Kathryn Irwin and Tim Tubbs will perform songs and readings from and about the Great War, including some from a 1930s songbook, and now in the Scarborough Collections, entitled Songs Our Soldiers Sang.

Musical director Tim Tubbs said: “Matt, Kathryn and I will introduce and sing various songs of the Great War, some of them offering opportunities for the audience to join in, including poems and letters from the Great War and the people who played a part in it.

“We will sing First World War hits as originally performed, and then offset them against the parodies (occasionally rather near the bone) that the serving soldiers sang in the trenches. Alongside the best-known items, we’ve included some less familiar material, and we hope the costumed concert will be stirring and moving by turns, expressing differing reactions to the experience of the Great War.”

The programme will include Oh, It’s A Lovely War!; Good-bye-ee; Keep The Home Fires Burning; Lili Marleen: Pack Up Your Troubles and It’s A Long Way To Tipperary.

The event starts at 7.30pm, and tickets are £6, to include a cup of tea or coffee. To book, phone 01723 374753.
