HELMSLEY Arts Centre's Writing Weekend celebrates the art of storytelling and the craft of writing in a participatory programme of events from tomorrow until Sunday, ranging from writer-led workshops to films, plays and audiences with authors.

The weekend starts tomorrow with an evening of Shakespeare Unplugged by Bristol company Fine Chisel Theatre, whose Midnight At The Boar’s Head celebrates the Bard’s favourite pub in a 7pm show filled with an array of colourful characters and rousing songs. This touring production was originally commissioned and produced by the Theatre Royal, Bath.

Anne Fine, who was the second children’s Laureate, will reflect on her life as a writer in An Audience With Children’s Author Anne Fine on Saturday at 7.30pm, while on Sunday from 10.30am she will lead both a workshop, Writing for Children & Getting Published, and a masterclass, Writing for Children, offering advice to aspiring writers. Her best-known book, Goggle Eyes, won both the Guardian’s Fiction Prize and the Carnegie Medal.

The northern premiere of Huw Wahl's new film about poet, art critic and self-professed anarchist Herbert Read, To Hell With Culture, will be screened on Saturday at 3pm. Read’s life and work are explored through his poetry, archival footage and the Ryedale landscape where he was born.

Other events include a storytelling workshop for children with Ian Douglas on Saturday at 11.30am and In Conversation with Piers Paul Read at 2pm that day. For more information on the Writing Weekend events, visit helmsleyarts.co.uk
