RYEDALE artist Kate Siddle has been awarded a prestigious £1,000 art prize for the best body of work in the Great North Art Show, currently being held in Ripon Cathedral.

Kate, who has a studio at The Sawmills Studios in Helmsley, was selected by judges Simon Palmer, a former Royal Academy judge, and Jane Sellars, of the Mercer Gallery in Harrogate and contributor to BBC 4’s Front Row, for the prize, sponsored by Carter Jonas.

“I am absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Carter Jonas Prize at the Great North Art Show,” said Kate, who describes her abstract paintings as a response to the landscape she inhabits.

“The standard of artwork is very high so it came as a lovely surprise to find that I had been chosen. It means that I can continue to paint and further develop my work.”

The 2013 Great North Art Show runs until Sunday, 10am-4pm daily, and features more than 250 pieces of work by 36 professional artists, four photographers and one sculptor, with subject matter ranging from still lifes, portraits and landscapes, to abstracts and wildlife studies.
