A YORK-BASED writer who survived a tragic hit-and-run has published his first book.

Jack Martindale, 25, wrote Battling a Brain Injury: The Life that Jack Built about his remarkable recovery.

He had been walking home from New Year celebrations with four friends in London in 2010 when the group was hit by an out of control car. Two of his friends were killed as a result of the accident and Jack was left with very severe head injuries and in a coma from which it was thought he may never emerge.

Following lengthy rehabilitation the former University of York student has made a phenomenal recovery and has gone on to complete his degree in English and Politics and his book, which he hopes will provide insight to others and help de-stigmatise brain injuries for the future.

Jack said about his book launch in York: "Overwhelming is probably the best way to describe how it feels... Surreal is definitely how holding your own book launch felt. Ultimately I'm just grateful to all of the lovely crowd that came along to offer their support."
