AN INTRIGUING exhibition revealing the many facets of Rievaulx has gone on display at Nunnington Hall.

Aspects of Rievaulx features the 18th century Rievaulx Terrace, and the ruined 13th century Rievaulx Cistercian Abbey.

The collection of paintings and drawings explores the delicate balance of the unblemished natural beauty of the landscape, and of the impact of the historic structures amidst it.

Hosted by the National Trust, the exhibition will showcase artwork by four talented local artists from the Whitby Art Society - Anne Thornhill, Peter Hicks, Sue Morton and Paul Blackwell.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see about 50 unique pieces of original artwork on display, from 30 centimetres ink sketches and watercolours, to five foot acrylic paintings.

Each artist has captured these iconic landmarks through diverse styles and media, comparing the natural beauty of Rievaulx Terrace and the woodland vistas, to the strong architectural design of Rievaulx Abbey.

Visitors to the exhibition on Saturday, February 27, will also have the opportunity to meet the artists from 11am to 1pm, when they will be visiting Nunnington Hall to talk with visitors and answer any questions.

Laura Kennedy, visitor experience manager for Nunnington Hall, said: “We’re so proud that both of these spectacular historic sites have inspired artists to return week after week to capture their beauty on paper and canvas.

"Each artist displays a unique style - Paul Blackwell’s strong bold markings represent the architectural structure of the Terrace Temples and the Abbey, balances beautifully with Anne Thornhill’s magnificent collage of colours, exploring the site’s spiritual sense.”

Paul Blackwell, exhibiting artist, said: “We have worked over a two-year period for this exhibition, in all weathers. Yet each visit is magical with the changing seasons, weather conditions and light. We’ve never had a disappointing visit and there are always new possibilities to paint and draw.”

The exhibition will be on display at Nunnington Hall until Sunday, March 13.

Nunnington Hall is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 11am to 5pm, and Mondays in school holidays.
