WORRIES about letting a new recruit behind the wheel of expensive farm machinery may well be a thing of the past.

One of the most popular exhibits at a recent technology showcase for the agriculture industry was a state-of-the-art tractor driving simulator.

The event, organised by Bishop Burton College, attracted more than 400 visitors keen to find out more about the latest innovations in teaching and learning for the land-based sector.

Along with Tenstar’s tractor driving simulator another hit was Lincoln Electric’s virtual welder; both of which enable beginners to develop their skills in a safe environment before they attempt the real thing.

Bill Meredith, vice-principal of Bishop Burton College, said: “The venue was very symbolic as it’s where our current Riseholme campus is being relocated.

“This will be the first land-based college to be built in the UK for more than 50 years so it makes sense to position ourselves at the forefront of the latest innovations in farming technologies. We were really proud to stage this event and I couldn’t have been happier with the support provided by machinery dealers and equipment suppliers. They really pulled out all the stops to make the day a success.

“We intend to make events of this sort a regular feature as we establish the new Riseholme campus on the showground and will be expanding the range of courses on offer to include a new foundation degree in agriculture.”

“The stimulating teaching and latest innovations showcased at this technology event will be a hallmark of what Riseholme – and, of course, Bishop Burton College – are all about.”

Students were able to access many of the learning systems using their own smart phones and other digital devices such as ipads.
