A NURSERY has extended its business with a unique display of spring colour.

RV Roger Ltd of Pickering, has opened their new extension to the bulb yard which includes the National Collection of Dog’s Tooth Violet (Erythronium), with more than 140 varieties on show for the next couple of weeks.

The National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens (NCCPG) is the world’s leading cultivated plant conservation charity.

RV Roger is the guardian of this collection of Erythronium, which is one of the most beautiful spring flowering bulbs indigenous to Northern Europe.

The nursery and NCCPG has brought together the talents of botanists, horticulturalists and conservationists plus the dedication of keen amateur and professional gardeners. Through a number of conservation projects, including the National Plant Collections and Threatened Plants Project, the NCCPG is helping to safeguard our unique garden flora across Britain and Ireland.

Ian Roger of RV Roger said: “We’re delighted to show off this beautiful little harbinger of spring, and keen to demonstrate that it’s quite straightforward to grow, and enjoy in most gardens.

"Many of this beautiful range of plants are quite easy to grow, although others are a little more demanding. They do best when planted under trees and shrubs, as they would be in their natural woodland setting."

He added: "They hate being moved around, so it’s best to choose a spot where they can be left undisturbed. It is common for them not to flower in their first year of planting, but patience will be rewarded with beautifully delicate blooms in early to middle springtime."
