YORK City Knights have strengthened their back-line options by bringing in winger Conor McGrath from Halifax on a one-month loan.

The 22-year-old Salford academy product burst onto the first-team scene at Fax in 2017 when scoring a hat-trick in the Betfred Championship against Sheffield Eagles, and he has featured in Richard Marshall’s teams that finished in the top four in both 2017 and 2018.

York made the move with wingers Ash Robson and Matt Chilton currently in the treatment room while fellow outside-back Perry Whiteley pulled out of last week's match against Fax at the last minute due to a migraine. Jason Bass, who switched to the wing in Whiteley's stead, is also an injury doubt for this week's visit of fellow high-fliers Sheffield Eagles.

Knights head coach James Ford said: “I’m pleased to bring in an outside-back of Conor’s potential. I’d like to thank the supporters, sponsors and the board for backing me once again.

“Conor has the potential to be a quality player for the Knights if his attention to detail is where it needs to be. He needs to show a desire to work hard, learn and succeed.

"He’s coming from a great environment and I’m looking forward to working with him and facilitating his development.”

McGrath, who can also play at centre, said: “I’m really grateful to get an opportunity to play some Championship rugby, especially at a club that’s flying at the minute.

“Hopefully I can get out there and make an impression. I have a big month ahead of me and have to take my chances, as and when they come.”

McGrath goes straight into contention for the Knights this Sunday when they host Sheffield at Bootham Crescent.
