RYEDALE School have won both the Year 7 and Year 8 Scarborough & District basketball tournaments.

The Year 7s team, led well by Bailey Crossland, met St Augustine’s School, of Scarborough, in the semi-final of their tournament, winning a tight game 9-5, with Marcus Gatenby performing well under the basket, finishing off some strong moves. They then met a strong Scalby School team in the final.

Strong defending saw the sides cancel each other out for large parts but Ryedale’s Dougie Brewster-Brown led fast breaks to take the game away from Scalby in the closing stages, Ryedale eventually winning 19-10. Ryedale’s Year 8 team dominated Graham School, Scarborough, in their first game, with quick passing and strong rebounding leading to a 104-6 demolition. George Stead and Jacob Barbour starred.

Ryedale took this form into the final against Malton School, winning the game 51-16. Lewis Garbutt, Will Jeffels and Jake Edwards played particularly well in the final, with skipper Harry Coldbeck picking up the trophy.

Meanwhile, Year 5 and 6 athletes from Pickering Community Junior School were in fine form at the Lady Lumley’s School cluster sportshall athletics competition in Pickering.

Competing against Thornton-le-Dale, St Joseph’s and Rosedale primary schools, the team made some fantastic baton changes to dominate the track events, and strong performances in the long jump and javelin gave the team a combined total of 164 points to win the event ahead of Thornton-le-Dale in second place with 128.

The Pickering pupils therefore qualified for the Ryedale & Whitby Partnership finals.
