Duncombe Park ’s promotion aspirations in Hunters York & District Senior League division three were virtually ended by a 10-wicket trouncing by Woodhouse Grange on Saturday.

At least, however, they have had something to celebrate having lifted the Readman Trophy.

League leaders Grange now need just two points from their final game to clinch the title, while Welton & Brough need six points to be assured of the second promotion slot.

Pete Humpleby was unbeaten on 61 in Park’s 108 all out against Grange, a total that presented no problem to Matt Hattee (52 not out) and Jon Bean (47no).

At the other end of the table, Malton & Old Malton II boosted their survival hopes by beating Hovingham by 62 runs. James Skelton (5-21) had Malt ousted for 118 but H Clark (5-38) skittled the hosts for 59.

Richard Fountain (70), Tom Hall (67) and Dan Easton (5-43) helped Sessay II to gain much the better of a draw with Sheriff Hutton.

Joe Schofield made 69 for the losers, who need eight points from their final game to avoid the drop.

Duncombe Park have taken a trophy from 2012, however, after beating Dringhouses in the semi-final of the Readman Cup and then Patrington in the final – the latter on run-rate after rain curtailed the match.

The semi was played at Studley Royal and saw Dringhouses bowled out for 89 in the 19th over after a strong fielding performance by Park capped by a fantastic wicketkeeping display from Connor Campbell, who took difficult catches to dismiss both openers.

Ali Holmes and Peter Kent both ended with 2-14 from four overs apiece. Duncombe Park reached their target in the 14th over for the loss of one wicket with Brian Leckenby (46no) and Humpleby (28no) taking them home with an unbeaten partnership of 74.

The final was at Ripon against Patrington, who had beaten Tadcaster Magnets in the other semi-final, with rain reducing the game from 20 overs to 16 per side.

Duncombe Park started positively and Leckenby (35), Holmes (28) and Kent (29) took them to 117-4.

Patrington’s reply started slowly, man-of-the-match Holmes conceding only 15 runs from his three overs, but their innings gathered pace as Jordy Critchley hit a fine 31.

The weather had the final say, though, ending the contest with Patrington on 79-2 off 12 overs.

The result had to be determined by the best run-rate and Duncombe Park claimed their third victory in this competition as theirs was 7.3 to Patrington’s 6.5.
