OLD Malton St Mary’s cruised into the last eight of the York FA Senior Cup when brushing aside York Minster Engineering League premier division rivals Haxby United 8-0.

St Mary’s hit four goals either side of half-time, Jon Newton leading the way with a hat-trick, against the side they meet again on Saturday in the league, when Haxby will hope to get to grips with a rampant strikeforce.

The writing was on the wall after nine minutes as the hosts quickly gleaned a two-goal lead.

Newton was the architect for the opener as he turned his man to fire in a low cross from the right that was half cleared to Sam Lander, who blasted home.

Jamie Shepherd and Danny Fogg then carved open the visitors down the left, allowing Newton to slide the ball under the Haxby ’keeper for number two.

Lander saw a shot crash off the outside of a post and Newton blazed over, before St Mary’s, doing all the pressing, added to their lead on 36 minutes.

Fogg’s run into the box was ended with a foul and Scott Preston sent the ’keeper the wrong way.

Then, after more slick build-up play, Jack Riley fired in a telling cross and Newton turned to slot in his second.

The second half brought no respite for Haxby as Fogg jinked past two men before hitting a screamer into a top corner.

Scott and Liam Preston made way for Dean Nuttall and Robbie Baker on 62 minutes, Nuttall’s introduction having an immediate impact as, with his first touch, he passed the ball home from 18 yards for number six.

With Haxby chasing shadows, number seven quickly followed courtesy of Newton, who finished off Baker’s cross for a deserved hat-trick.

Player-boss Darren Dunning replaced Newton for his second appearance of the season and soon settled in next to brother Richard at the heart of the Old Malton midfield.

Baker was guilty of the miss of the season with five minutes left, but Nuttall’s 88th-minute cross brought Old Malton’s eighth goal when Simon Cooke ghosted in at the far post to side-foot home.

Cup holders Dringhouses were 4-2 winners over Amotherby & Swinton.

George Bissett put the York League premier division side 1-0 up and, despite a penalty equaliser, ’Houses were 3-1 ahead at the break after goals from Lee Fisher and Tom Bissett. Dan Owers netted for Dringhouses after the break before Amotherby, who play in the division below, pulled a goal back late on.

Malton & Norton held on for a 2-1 victory over Heworth.

The Ryedale side, one place and two points above bottom club Heworth in the York League’s division one, led 2-0 at the break after goals from Nigel Allen and Daryll Craggs. Heworth hit the woodwork twice in the second half before Kieran Flanigan pulled a goal back.

A first-half hat-trick from Geoff Pinkney helped to inspire Aviva to a crushing 9-1 victory over Amotherby & Swinton Reserves in round two of the York FA Saturday Junior Cup.

Terrington Glory extended their lead at the top of York Minster Engineering League division one with a 3-0 win over Bishopthorpe.

Dave Bradshaw, Chris Leedham and Tom Paley shared the Glory goals.

Reserve ‘A’ leaders Old Malton St Mary’s reserves maintained their 100 per cent record with a hard earned 2- 1 home win over Dringhouses.

Callum Holmes put the Ryedale side in front and Bryde Freer doubled their advantage. George Middleton pulled a goal back for Dringhouses, but the hosts held out to record their fifth straight win.
