Malton & Norton continued their excellent form by beating Bishopthorpe United 2-0 to rise another place in York Minster Engineering division one.

M&N, having previously had relegation concerns, have risen to mid-table and more good wins could give them an outside chance of breaking into the promotion picture.

They started with an unchanged team and, after even opening exchanges, Rhys Crowe on the left and Chris Hodgson on the right began to cause the visitors problems, Marcus Godsell hitting the bar with an early chance.

Darryl Craggs and Nick Drew controlled the midfield and provide the platform for Curtis Drummond, Tom Audsley and Paul Boyes to pepper the Bishopthorpe goal.

Every shot was off target until M&N broke the deadlock a minute before half-time with a deserved, if fortunate, goal.

After good build-up play in midfield, the ball was passed to Drummond, pictured. He lobbed the ball goalwards, with no home player near, and it bounced over the stretching goalkeeper and into the net.

Nick Drew took a bad challenge in the back minutes earlier and, although he continued playing after lengthy treatment, he had to be substituted just after half-time – and a hospital visit later found he had dislocated a shoulder.

Liam Burdett and Brian Howe came on for the second half, with M&N continuing to press.

They increased the lead after a bit of magic from another substitute, Wayne Hazel. He beat two players and crossed for Tom Audsley to score.

A brilliant save by Mark Tansey kept the lead intact but otherwise M&N were rarely troubled, Sean Walker and Connor Shipley dealing convincingly with any attacks.

This Saturday, M&N visit high-flying Nestlé Rowntree where their form will face a stiffer examination.

Division two leaders Terrington Glory fell to a shock 2-1 home defeat to Church Fenton White Horse, leaving Ryedale rivals Amotherby & Swinton more opportunity to go top should they win their games in hand.

Brothers Dave and John Marshall scored for White Horse, and a late reply by James Miller could not prevent a first home loss in 14 matches for Glory.

A&S, who were winning a North Riding County FA Challenge Cup tie, now have five games in hand in which to make up a seven-point deficit.

Old Malton St Mary’s did not have a game in the premier division, while, in reserve ‘A’, Old Malton Reserves’ good run ended with a 4-1 loss at leaders Dunnington.

Old Mary’s bagged an equaliser with a fierce free-kick from Richard Stevenson, but parity was not to last as Andy Rose (2) and Matty Playe hit unanswered goals for the table-toppers to add to John Gill’s opener.

There was no such trouble in reserve ‘C’ for Malton & Norton Reserves.

They thumped Crayke 3-0 to boost their promotion hopes with Grant Stevens, Simon Reeves and Nigel Allen sharing the plunder.
