Tenth-placed Goole Town pulled off the shock result of the day – and arguably the season – when they beat Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League premier division leaders Clifton Alliance.

Neil Foster was the only Goole batsman to register a major score, but his 55 out of his side’s 137 proved to be crucial as they won by nine runs in a low-scoring game at Westfield.

Alliance bowlers Rich Carroll (5-34) and Alex Renton (3-25) appeared to have set up victory for the title favourites.

However, Richard Mann (3-42) and Mark Spetch (3-18) then spoilt the party by tumbling Alliance out for 128 in 44 overs. Renton added 34 to his three wickets, while Shaun Holmes made 31.

Thirsk had the worst of a high-scoring draw at Dunnington, whose Collis King proved he still has the ability to perform with the ball by taking 5-49.

He was outshone by skipper Paul Miles who, just a few weeks after having an knee operation, hit 116.

With Dave Johnson making 31 and Simon Dwyer 29, Dunnington took tea at 258-8.

When Thirsk replied, Des Wyrill hit 52 before retiring injured, Kieron Fenwick made 38 and Ryan McKendry hit 35 to help them reach a safe draw at 198-8.

A 133-run second-wicket stand between Jonathon Marwood (67) and Martin Piercy (65) helped Easingwold post a total of 231-8 when entertaining Beverley Town.

Andrew Dawson chipped in with 30, while visiting Faisal Abid claimed 6-53.

Abid then added 44 to Ben Fish’s 64 as Beverley gained a draw at 183-8 to limit Easingwold’s threat to the top two. Successful home bowlers were Paul Skilbeck (3-28) and Steve Piercy (4-57).

Studley Royal’s Steve Walmsley was in fine form as he hit 63 and then claimed 5-41 against Sessay.

With Charlie Scatchard and Matt Coad each making 39, Studley were able to reach 207-8 against Sessay, whose Matt Till had 4-45.

Till followed with 55, but was outdone by Walmsley, whose bowling restricted Sessay to 164-9.

Woodhouse Grange’s hopes of retaining their title took a further knock when they could only gain the better of a draw against Fenner despite a second-wicket stand of 112 between Nick Hadfield (78) and Chris Bilton (40).

Grange’s total was hoisted to 243-6 when Mike Burdett rattled an unbeaten 56. Fenner’s Steve Sargeant had 3-59. Peter Shally (48), Ross Davy (42) and Mike Cooke (35) took Fenner to 204-7.

Acomb gained a three-wicket last-ball win at Stamford Bridge to close to within three points of their opponents. Phil Hill’s 62 was the highlight of Bridge’s 179-9, with George Brown taking 6-50.

Acomb’s reply featured good knocks from Andy Tute (49), Richard Sykes (44) and Neil Grant (39). Pete Aconley took 4-43.
