MALTON & Norton Golf Club star Simon Dyson finished 41st in the 3 Irish Open after fighting back from an eight-over-par third round 80.

Dyson made the cut on the Bawtry course after the first two rounds but was left in joint-last place going into the final round after being blown off course on Saturday, when high winds played havoc with the tournament.

Play was suspended for five hours and low scoring was almost impossible, with only two players shooting sub-70 rounds.

Dyson was left on three-over-par for the tournament after a round which included five bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey, but he bounced back with a 68 on Sunday, including six birides, to finish on one under par.

The event was won by amateur Shane Lowry.

Dyson is now 55th in the European Tour Race to Dubai rankings, needing a top-60 finish to qualify for the Players’ Championship, worth $10 million, in November.

He is in the field for the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, which starts tomorrow (Thursday).

Malton product Emma Brown made a valiant effort in trying to win the English Close Championship for a third time. However, she lost out in the semi-final to Tara Watts of Middlesex by one hole.
