OLD Malton St Mary’s wrapped up their Leeper Hare York & District League premier division programme in style with a superb team effort in a 7-1 demolition of a strong Haxby United.

Visitors Malt, who had several first-teamers missing, led 4-1 even before Haxby had their ’keeper sent off, with their crop of youngsters showing their worth, led by hat-trick hero Scott Preston, Robbie Baker and James Stone.

Malton, long since assured of runners-up spot, were given the ideal start when pressure from Scott Preston saw a back pass from ex-professional Mark Thompson bounce over the ’keeper’s foot for a second-minute lead.

Then good one-touch football was finished well on 11 minutes by a thumping shot by Preston.

Both ’keepers were kept busy but there were no more goals before half-time.

That changed three minutes after the restart as Stone broke the offside trap and slid the ball under the ’keeper. Karl Cooper’s rash challenge saw Haxby awarded a penalty – scored by the ’keeper – but Malton then took command.

Preston finished another flowing move, then completed his hat-trick from the spot after Baker was wiped out as he rounded the ’keeper, who was sent off.

Liam Cooper smashed in number six with 13 minutes left after great work by Luke Thompson, and a storming run from left-back by Jamie Shepherd saw a neat one-two with Stone fired home for number seven.

Old Malton held their presentation evening on Saturday. The award-winners were: First team: Players’ Player of the Season – Ryan Cooper; Manager’s Player of the Season – Ryan McGinty. Second team: Players’ Player – Jack Thackray; Manager’s Player – Elliot Taylor. Third team: Players’ Player – Dean Leadill; Manager’s Player – Liam Preston. Leading goalscorer: Dave Bell (36 goals).
