LAST Wednesday saw the return of the newitts.com Beckett Football League with the first round of midweek fixtures.

Amotherby & Swinton and Bagby undoubtedly met in the division’s match of the day, the hosts running riot to get their campaign truly up and running with a 9-3 thrashing.

Goals from Sam Flinton, Matthew Bean and George Pierson saw Amotherby hold a 5-1 advantage at the interval, the latter two then going on to complete their hat-tricks.

Dave Cocks and Sam Ferebee brought the score back to 7-3, but further strikes from Oliver Towse and Mathew Webster completed Amotherby’s nine-goal haul.

Rosedale were also comfortable winners, where a Shaun Spozio hat-trick and a brace from Ryan Hewison saw them hit visitors Kirkdale for six.

The result was never in doubt for the hosts, as despite Dan Ward marking his return with a goal, the visitors left themselves with far too much to do late on.

Thornton le Dale, fresh from winning the Keith Sales Memorial Trophy, couldn’t continue their form in the League, falling to a 3-1 defeat at home to Union Rovers.

Union opened the scoring through Matty Jackson, who doubled his side’s lead early in the second half, with their hosts left frustrated by the woodwork.

Thornton did pull one back through Connor Leeks but left themselves open to the counter, Harry Thistleton unselfishly squaring for Jackson to complete his hat-trick late on.

Wombleton also marked their division one return with victory, delivering one of the performances of the evening to beat reigning champions Ayton 3-1 in their own backyard.

It was club legend Ryan Rivis who inevitably opened the scoring for the visitors after meeting a cross from Keelan Simpson, with Eric Hall then firing home the equaliser.

But Wombleton pushed on, Jake Dennison arrowing a thunderous effort into the roof of the net from 20 yards before Rivis turned provider for Simpson to complete the scoring.

On Saturday, The Valley hosted Ayton, with both teams looking to kickstart their division one campaigns after midweek losses.

A Luke McNulty double and a Jensen Bradbury strike gave the hosts a 3-0 lead, but despite Eli Spurr bringing his side back into the contest, a sublime 40-yard lob from Jack Scarborough settled the tie, leaving the current holders still chasing their first points of the season.

In contrast, Rosedale and Snainton followed their victories with a 3-3 stalemate.

The hosts struck first, but despite equalising, Snainton were behind again almost instantaneously.

Rosedale added a third before the opening half was out but the second forty-five belonged to the visitors, Dan Simpson and Tyler Richardson finding themselves on the scoresheet to ensure the game ended level.

A Brandon Read brace and Matty Jackson strike saw Union hold off Kirkdale 3-2, whilst Wombleton ran riot at Bagby to record their second win of the season in style.

Dave Thompson netted five, Luke Quantock three and Ryan Rivis two before Keelan Simpson got himself in on the act as they put their hosts to the sword 11-2.

Amotherby & Swinton Reserves enjoyed similar fortune at Fishburn Academy in division two, building on a 6-0 half-time lead to claim the points in a 10-2 victory.

Josh Towse and Oliver Towse netted hat-tricks and Alex Croall a brace, with Sam Newman and Macauley Lacey also on the scoresheet for the visitors. Harry Coates and Aaron Locker provided the hosts’ reply.

Elsewhere in Whitby, Ryedale’s trip to the Fishermen’s Academy saw them fail to return with the spoils, Josh Linsley, Marshal Kelly and Bradley Dowson seeing the hosts run out 3-1 victors.

Heslerton also got their campaign off to a winning start at home to newcomers Lealholm Reserves.

Alfie Jackson scored twice for the visitors, but it wasn’t enough, a brace from Jordan Anderson alongside goals from Morgan Kendrew and Jake Allardyce securing a 4-2 victory for the hosts.
