SESSAY held their nerve to go top of the Hunters York & District Senior League premier division by defeating York with just one ball to spare.

The cancellation of Pickering's game at Studley Royal meant top spot would go to the winners of the contest at Clifton Park.

For much of the game, it looked as though that would be the home side, but an outstanding century from Craig Ross (111) and an unbeaten 53 from Tom Sowerby transformed the game after the visitors had been 108-5 chasing a target of 247.

Earlier in the day, the home side's innings began well with a half-century from opener Tom Spearman (51) before three wickets each from Stephen Langstaff (3-59) and Tim Hall (3-50) pulled things back. Runs down the order from Neil Laidlaw (42) and Oliver Leedham (41 not out) looked to have put the hosts in a strong position at the halfway stage, but the day belonged to the visitors.

A partnership of 54 between Andrew Burton (51) and Jamie Roe (30) towards the end of Beverley Town's innings proved crucial as they were able to reach 181-9, which was enough to beat Hull Zingari and see them up to second in the standings.

Only Benjamin Fish (35) was able to withstand an early onslaught with the new ball from Nathan Johnson (4-52) as the hosts found themselves 70-6 before they recovered through Burton and Roe.

The latter picked up the key wicket of Jack Storey as the first of three-wicket haul, but the real damage was done by Joey Franklin (5-42), including visiting skipper and top scorer Matthew Bunn for 29.

A defeat by 46 runs was Zingari's third of the season and leaves them bottom of the table.

Welton beat Folkton & Flixton to record their first win since the opening day.

James Windeatt (69) was once again instrumental in the result, alongside Jack Steel (72no) adding 78 for the fourth wicket.

The hosts closed on 218-6 with Harry Walmsley (3-85) responsible for half the wickets to fall, although they came at considerable cost.

Walmsley (39) and Elliot Hatton (78) put the visitors in a strong position at 150-4 following their 107-run stand but the bowling of both Luke Hills (3-23) and Thomas Copp (4-44) kept the pressure on, and they were eventually bowled out for 183.

The result brings Welton to within a point of Folkton & Flixton with both sides in the top half after just over a quarter of the season.

Elsewhere in the division, rain caused frustration for sides desperate to get back to playing cricket after the trials and tribulations of last season.

Whitkirk, who were due to host Malton & Old Malton, have been the hardest hit, this week's cancellation the third in their last four matches, with the other game in the sequence being abandoned with a result in sight.

There was no play at Galphay Road where top-of-the-table Pickering were due to take on winless Studley Royal and Goole Town were denied the opportunity of back-to-back home victories with conditions unplayable for the visit of Sheriff Hutton Bridge.
