AKIL WRIGHT says York City's 3-0 friendly win at Notts County has provided a confidence boost ahead of the new season.

The midfielder scored the opener at Meadow Lane in what was his second pre-season match after signing for the Minstermen in the middle of September.

His was an invigorating presence in midfield, winning the ball back and driving the side forward throughout the first half.

Asked if the squad were confident heading into the new campaign, Wright said: "After this win especially. Even though it's a friendly, it's important to get wins during pre-season.

"We're all looking forward to it now, we're confident and we can't wait."

Wright put York in front with a guided header just after the quarter-hour mark, laying the foundations for a confident and thoroughly deserved win at the National League outfit.

Two other summer signings, Jake Cassidy and Alex Wollerton, also got on the scoresheet.

"I did score a few in my second season at Wrexham," Wright added. "I scored about six headers I think. I'm known for getting in the box and scoring headers.

"It's nice to get another goal."

He continued: "My game is energetic, just being around midfield, getting second balls.

"The gaffer obviously wants us to be solid in midfield, and I feel like I've been a presence in the box.

"I'm fit and now looking forward to the next game.

"I'm settling in quite quickly, I think. Living up in York during the week, it's been nice. It's been a good two weeks."

On his targets for the season, Wright said: "Being a part of promotion - that's what everyone wants and hopefully we'll do that."

York visit Warrington Rylands in the FA Cup this Saturday (3pm).
