YORK boxer Paris Smith has returned from Serbia with a gold medal after an emphatic stoppage victory.

Smith, who boxes out of Clifton Moor's Legions gym, needed just 44 seconds to stop Croatia national champion Nika Lopac and come home victorious from the Nations Cup in Sombor.

Smith was boxing in only her second international tournament, having won a gold medal at the European Schoolgirls Championships back in August, and stepped up in weight to 70kg.

But, she showed few nerves and from the off landed strongly with her straight left hand as the pair went toe-to-toe.

A series of flush one-two combinations by Smith forced the first of the two standing counts from the referee.

More unanswered shots rained in from Smith after the count, with another one forced, before the towel was thrown in by Lopac's corner.

Smith was one of five England boxers to win gold medals.
