CITY of York sealed their maiden West Yorkshire Cross Country League senior men’s title in style with victory in the final round at Cleckheaton.

York’s men’s success added to their under-13 girls’ team victory, which had been secured with a race to go.

It capped a fine day for the club, with Daniel Campbell winning the U11 boys’ race to take his individual title. Clubmate Lottie Langan finished second in the U13 girls’ standings after winning the final round.

York’s men had to finish fifth or better to guarantee the league honours, but underlined their strength by bagging a third successive victory.

Although the course wasn't as muddy as the previous two rounds, the sharp turns and hills made it another testing day for the runners.

Alex Dickinson was York’s first man home, completing the 8.6 kilometre course in 32 minutes 36 seconds, with George Phillips (32.48) a place behind.

Jasper Baker (34.46), Steve Asquith (35.02), Danny Figg (35.31) and Mark Cage (36.02) completed the scoring team.

Phillips and Dickinson finished third and fourth overall in the individual senior men’s standings as runners’ best three races from four counted. Kyle McLeay came third in the U20 category.

York’s Charlotte Mason finished second in the senior women’s race over 5.1km, clocking 20.58 to winner Jennifer Walsh’s (Leeds City) 20.18.

York Knavesmire Harriers’ Emily Baines (22.21) was 10th on the day, but secured second place in the senior ladies’ standings, while their team also finished runners-up.

City of York’s Campbell edged out Rothwell Harriers’ Noah Lunn by one second in the U11 boys’ race, completing the 1.3km course in 4.57. This was the champion’s third win from three starts.

Langan secured her first league win in the U13 girls’ category, clocking 10.18 for the 2.6km course to finish eight seconds clear of Harrogate’s Hazel Forrest.

York’s U15 girls’ team came second on the day, led home by Inez Khaddi, who finished 10th in 13.16 over a 3km course.

The club’s U13 boys’ finished third in the series, with ninth-placed Will Chalk (12.34) their leading finisher on the day, again over a 3km course.

Tommy Shaw clocked 20.07 for eighth in the 5.1km U17 boys’ race.

Edward Hanley (13.37) came 10th in the U15 boys’ race over 3.4km.
