ALTHOUGH pleased with York City's recovery at Pickering Town, assistant manager Micky Cummins was far less so with the performance that got them into the tricky situation.

The Pikes went into half-time with a 2-0 lead thanks to Issy Pearson's tap-in and Mikey Hollingsworth's header.

But York staged a fierce comeback in the second half with three goals in the 11 minutes following the restart from Wes York, Liam Smith and Macaulay Langstaff before a second from Smith 15 minutes on.

With a City side composed of players with less game under their belts than others, this comeback was the most dramatic of the pre-season campaign, which has also included a fightback to victory over Hartlepool United and City showing good resistance in the 2-1 win over Scarborough Athletic.

"We're all on this journey together," said Cummins. "And from the top to the bottom, we're trying to all aboard the same approach.

"It was good to see the response but we never should have been in that situation to begin with.

"They need to perform for 90 minutes and not just 45.

"(The team) was a bit of a mismatch - lads who needed minutes, Wes (York) and Macca (Macaulay Langstaff) coming back from injury, and five triallists.

"We weren't pleased with the first half. We weren't quick enough to the ball and didn't sense the danger - and the problems they did cause, they scored from. We were disappointed with that.

"We looked a better force in the second half, along with a good old half-time rollicking.

"Charlie Jebson looked good second half and Reiss Harrison had some good momentum. It was good having Wes (York) back, his pace was a threat behind, and Macca was key as well."

Tom Allan, wearing the captain's armband for the evening, added: "It was good to come out second half after our performance in the first half and put the wrongs right.

"I'm enjoying my pre-season. Last pre-season I got injured in the first game and it set me back six weeks. Now I have played most games feeling fit and sharp.

"Now the manager has seen me all pre-season so hopefully I'm in his plans."
