ANDREW GALE admitted he was “gutted” for Matthew Fisher after the seam bowling all-rounder suffered a dislocated right shoulder while fielding during Yorkshire’s Vitality Blast defeat to Derbyshire at Chesterfield.

Fisher’s wretched luck with injuries has continued, and the extent of the damage will only be known when he sees a specialist on Monday.

After a stress fracture of the back ended last season early and disrupted his winter, he then suffered a broken thumb whilst batting in the nets in March.

The Sheriff Hutton Bridge product recently returned to first-team action and impressed in Championship matches against Essex and Somerset, but he now faces another spell on the sidelines.

Fisher, 21, hit nine down the order in Yorkshire’s 164-8 before bowling one over with the new ball.

Then, in the third over, he was diving to save a boundary at wide long-on only for his shoulder to pop out in what actually proved to be a successful attempt.

After Fisher left the field, Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman went on to hit an unbeaten 70 which anchored his side’s pursuit with five wickets and five balls remaining.

“I’m gutted for Fish. He’s dislocated his shoulder. It’s popped out and when he’s walking off, it’s popped back in,” said coach Gale.

“We’ll assess him, but I feel for the lad because he’s just started to hit his straps and has come good. Now he’s had another freakish injury.

“Until he’s seen a specialist, we’ll not know how long he’s out for. But it was dislocated, which is never good, especially with it being his right shoulder - his bowling shoulder.

“Like I say, I’m gutted for him because he’s worked so hard, putting so many hours in in the gym. But it’s one injury after another, and it’s through no fault of his own.

“I thought he was brilliant in the last two Championship games.

“We wanted to bring him back at the right time when he was full of confidence and form. And he’s done a really good job.”

Yorkshire have now lost five successive T20 games against Derbyshire at all venues and haven’t won on this ground, where they play this fixture regularly, since 2014.

“The curse of Chesterfield continues. For whatever reason, we can’t seem to get over the line here,” said Gale, whose side had recovered from 77-6 to post a challenging total thanks to seventh-wicket pair Jordan Thompson and Jonny Tattersall sharing 66 inside seven overs.

“We did lots of good things,” said Gale.

“There were a couple of things that probably cost us the game. With the bat, between the fifth over to the 10th or 11th, we lost too many wickets.

“But I thought Tommo and Tatts were outstanding. Their partnership got us back in the game, and at halfway that was a winning total.

“Then with the ball, we didn’t get it quite right up front.

“We spoke about back of a length and probably bowled a bit fuller than that.

“It’s never easy when you lose a seamer out of a five-man attack. You are chasing your tail with a bowler down, but I still thought we did some good stuff.

“I thought we were outstanding in the field.

“But Godleman, fair play to him. He did to us what he did at Headingley in the 50-over comp. Every time he needed a boundary, he got one. You were just hoping he’d hit one up in the air.”

Thompson hit 50 off 27 balls with five sixes to post his maiden first-team fifty.

“I’m pleased for him,” added Gale. “He’s been good for us all year. When he’s come in the side, he’s never let anyone down. He was brave with his batting.”

Yorkshire have now had one No Result and one defeat from their opening two North Group games. They face Leicestershire at Grace Road on Tuesday evening (6.30pm).
