WARWICKSHIRE failed to read the fairytale script as they chased 217 on the final day to secure a three-wicket victory over Yorkshire at Clifton Park.

The Bears won the city of York’s first county fixture since 1890, ending Yorkshire’s unbeaten start to their Specsavers County Championship campaign.

This was the White Rose’s first defeat in seven matches this summer, and former duo Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Will Rhodes played key roles, the latter underpinning the chase with 83 at the top of the order.

Warwickshire began their chase 40 minutes before lunch with 76 overs remaining, and they only faltered late on by slipping from 166-1 to 215-7, with left-arm spinner James Logan, 21, claiming his first four first-class wickets in his second game.

Left-handed Rhodes, who plays his league cricket just up the road at Stamford Bridge, even smashed 26 off an afternoon over from York star Jack Leaning’s off-spin to break the back of the chase.

The 31st over, which started with the visitors on 80-0, yielded two fours and three leg-side sixes during a damaging spurt of 40 runs in three overs.

Rhodes and opening partner Dom Sibley, a 23-year-old rapidly emerging as a late Ashes contender, shared 132 inside 37 overs either side of lunch to leave Yorkshire with a mountain they were unable to climb. Sibley made 81.

A combined crowd just short of 8,000 through the four days watched a fixture which finished with 10 overs to spare.

Rhodes hit his sixes off Leaning over long-on, just in front of square on the leg-side and then over mid-wicket.

When Rhodes feathered an inside-edge onto his stumps against David Willey in the last 15 minutes before tea, the hard work had been done under sunny skies.

Logan’s first wicket sparked the late collapse as Warwickshire tottered. He had Rob Yates caught at short fine-leg.

His second was Sibley outrageously caught at mid-off one-handed by a diving Steve Patterson. Jeetan Patel then hit the winning runs.

Warwickshire have now won two of their last three matches, the other a draw, after losing their first three.

Another ex-Tyke Hannon-Dalby was also crucial to the outcome, while the day started with visiting captain Patel claiming his 700th and 701st wickets in all formats for Warwickshire on a ground he graced for a season in 2003.

Hannon-Dalby, celebrating his 30th birthday, took the first wicket of the morning by forcing Patterson to chop onto his stumps after Yorkshire had resumed on 178-7 in their second innings with a lead of 183.

He finished with four wickets in the innings and a career best haul of 9-137 in the match. Visiting captain Patel also finished with four wickets having bowled Logan and trapped Leaning lbw for 65 on the slog sweep.

Leaning played nicely in an innings which saw him reach 47 not out at close on day three and only fall as he went in search for quick runs with the White Rose nine wickets down.

Rhodes and Sibley, the latter being watched by the ECB’s technical director Andy Flower, reached lunch on 20-0 from 11 overs as they took the sting out of the new ball before putting their foot down later.

Yorkshire, fourth in the Division One table, picked up five points and face champions Surrey at Scarborough a week on Sunday.
