Adam Lyth warmed up for the start of the Specsavers County Championship against Nottinghamshire next month with a pre-season friendly hundred against the same side in Potchefstroom.

The Yorkshire opener retired out with 102 off 139 balls to his name, while Gary Ballance also posted 92 to underpin a positive White Rose day as they closed on 331-7.

Jack Leaning finished unbeaten on 58.

Yorkshire batted for the first 90 overs of this two-day friendly at Senwes Park before the Trent Bridge side will do the same tomorrow.

For Notts, Mark Footitt and fellow seamer Zak Chappell claimed two wickets apiece, while Jake Ball took the new ball and struck once.

Lyth, out cheaply during Wednesday’s one-day clash with Cardiff MCC Universities, hit 18 fours in his 139 balls.

After the early departure of Harry Brook, who was caught in the slips off Footitt for a duck, Lyth and Ballance shared 194 for the second wicket either side of lunch.

The pair went on the offensive immediately after lunch before the former retired out and the latter fell to ex-Leicester youngster Chappell, who later removed Matthew Waite.

Lyth said: “After the first day not getting many runs and not spending too much time out there, it’s nice to spend nearly three hours in the middle against an attack which might be similar to what we face in a couple of weeks’ time.

“So, yes, I’m really pleased with how I’ve gone.

“It’s also good news that Gaz played terrifically well as well.

“It’s been a very productive day for us.

“There was a little bit of swing and sideways movement with the new ball. We knew it was going to be quite tough early on with the pitch being slightly tacky, which it was in the one-day game.

“But I was pleased to learn from that game.

“On a tacky surface, you have to be quite tight on the drive, which I was.

“Gaz looked terrific, and it’s pleasing for the club and for him.”

Notts fought back with some late wickets, including Jonny Tattersall and Tim Bresnan for single figure scores.

But Leaning stood firm and played a patient knock to ensure it has been a strong start to the tour for the county’s batsmen, who topped 350 in Wednesday’s one-day clash with the students of Cardiff.

Yorkshire still have a two-day fixture with Durham on Monday and Tuesday before returning home.

They then have a three-day friendly against Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities, starting on March 31, before facing Notts at Trent Bridge on April 5.

But Lyth insisted: “I’m ready now.

“You can’t beat time in the middle scoring runs. Hopefully there will be more of that against Durham, but I’m looking forward to Leeds/Bradford and Notts.”

Meanwhile, new signing Duanne Olivier has linked up with the squad.

The former South Africa fast bowler met his team-mates on Thursday before bowling for the first time since his Test Match appearance against Sri Lanka late last month.

He is due to make his first appearance in a Yorkshire shirt in the two-day clash with Durham.
