SCARBOROUGH Athletic suffered a shock home defeat on Saturday as they crashed 4-2 to Warrington Town.

The Seadogs remain fifth in the Evo-Stik League division one north but teams below them are now able to catch up with games in hand and knock them out of the play-off places.

One such team are AFC Farsley, who visit Boro this Saturday (3pm) in a real six-pointer. Farsley lost 3-2 to table-toppers Salford City last time out.

Warrington stunned the Scarborough crowd of 373 last weekend by taking a two-goal lead through Ben Wharton, who curled a shot home after 20 minutes, and Chris Gaghan, who latched onto a superb through ball by Louis Corrigan three minutes later to double the advantage.

Four minutes before half-time, Ryan Blott scored for the Seadogs to briefly bring the lacklustre home team back into the game.

Three minutes into the second half, however, Gaghan scored his second goal of the game to restore the visitors’ two-goal advantage, and Nathan Burke scored Warrington’s fourth after 62 minutes to seal their victory.

Gary Bradshaw reduced the arrears after 72 minutes with a penalty.

Boro were to host Thornaby last night in the North Riding FA Senior Cup quarter-final.

Whitby Town, meanwhile, caused another Evo-Stik League upset, holding second-placed Ilkeston to a 1-1 draw on Saturday to return home with a deserved premier division point.

The mid-table Blues were the more impressive of the two sides in a goalless first half and they took a deserved lead through Niall Doran on 65 minutes, netting from close range following a free-kick.

The lead lasted just six minutes, though, as Ilkeston’s Bermudian international, Rai Simons, bagged an equaliser to maintain his club’s 15-match unbeaten run.

This coming Saturday, Whitby are at home to third-placed Buxton (3pm), who drew 1-1 at Witton Albion at the weekend.
