YORK Junior Angling Championship winner Charlie Darling has netted another trophy on the River Ouse.

Fresh from his victory in last month’s York & District Amalgamation of Anglers contest, Darling returned to the New Walk stretch of the Ouse to win the Junior Angling Match organised as part of the Festival of the Rivers, sponsored by City of York Council.

Despite the river being low, all 11 entrants caught, with perch, bleak and eels making up most of the catches with an odd bream and roach also contributing.

Float, feeder and pole were all successful methods, with worm finding the better fish.

Darling had the best overall weight and was the junior prize winner with a 2lb 13oz bag of perch and eels.

Luke Bond took the senior prize with 1lb 10oz, with Dominic Thompson, at peg one, taking the intermediate prize with 2lb 1oz despite the presence of several boats.

Every angler left with a prize courtesy of the sponsors, with many already looking forward to next year’s match.

Shepherd Angling Club’s first visit to the River Idle at Haxey in North Lincolnshire yielded victory for Matthew Crowl.

With the river low and clear, Crowl hauled in a weight of 4lb 15oz which comprised mainly perch backed up with small silver fish from peg seven to just beat his dad, Nigel, whose 4lb 7oz comprised all small silvers.
