APPLETON-LEMOORS

Tea, Chat and History – A Tea, Chat & History session will be held in the village hall between 2pm and 4pm on Monday, November 6. Admission is £1. Edward Harrison will give a talk called Exploring the Harrison Collection in the hall on Tuesday, November 28 at 7pm.

Pop Up market - The pop up market in the village hall was a huge success. Stalls made £125 for Macmillan Nurses, £175 for the playing field, £90 for the WI, £50 for Water Aid, £30 for the History Group. and Barbara’s craft stall also did well.

Bishop Hagg Wood - Volunteers for the next work task should meet at Riggs Barn from 10am until noon on Saturday, October 28.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Guides’ quiz - The British flora and wildlife quiz in aid of 1st Forge Valley and Thornton Guides raised £145. There were eight correct entries from the 32 sheets that were retuned. The winner, drawn by the guides, was Mrs S McGaw from Newton Stewart. Second was Rob Wyatt from Winchester.

Domino drive – There will be a domino drive in aid of the village hall on Thursday, October 26 in the hall at 7.30pm. Entrance is £1.50 to include supper.

Garden talk – The next meeting of Brompton and District Gardening Club will be held on Wednesday, October 25 in the village hall when Janice Burley with a talk about designing and building show gardens and real gardens. The evening will start at 7.30pm. New members are always welcome.

Church - The service on Sunday will be Morning Prayer at 8am using the Book of Common Prayer. It will be taken by Dr Don Jones.

Christmas Fest - Reservations for miniature Christmas trees are now open. Anyone who would like to sponsor and decorate a tree should phone Mary Jones on 859437. The preview evening, on Friday, December 1, is open to individuals, families, businesses and organisations. The church Christmas far is on Saturday, December 2.

Spoken Word evening - Another successful Spoken Word evening took centre stage on Saturday in the village hall. The event has grown in strength and another one is being planned.

BULMER

Bridge club - The meeting on Thursday, October 12 was won by Jackie Webb and Derek Searle with 62.1 per cent. Second were Val and Michael Allen on 60.4 per cent.

HOVINGHAM

Harvest festival - The Chapel tradition of a Sunday service Harvest Festival was led by Rev Mark Haynes. Rosie Shaw was the organist and Ian Battersby read a lesson. There was an array of gifts of fruit, vegetables, jams, coal, wood and water, together with arrangements of flowers by Christine Horne, Sarah Clifford and Carol Battersby. A service the following evening, conducted by farmer and local preacher Robin Jackson, was followed by an auction of the gifts by Keith Warters before supper was enjoyed.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Ladies Fellowship - Earlier this month members shared fellowship and a fun quiz with friends from the Tuesday Group in the Methodist Schoolroom. The quiz was followed by with a faith supper and plenty of time for socialising. The birthday girls for this month were Audrey Bell, Colleen Nicoll, Cath Nicholson and Ann Potter. A birthday card had also been sent to Ann Gudgeon. The next meeting of the Ladies Fellowship is on Wednesday, November 8 at 7.30pm in the library when Carol Messham will be talking about polymer clay art.

In tune - The Friday Rehearsal Orchestra has started its new season at the Memorial Hall, at 7.30pm each Friday. New members are welcome in strings and brass sections. Domino drive - The bowling club will hold a domino drive in the club house on Saturday, October 21 at 7.30pm.

KIRKDALE

St Gregory’s Minster - There will be no service at St Gregory’s on Sunday, October 29. Instead there will be a Benefice Sung Eucharist, led by the choir of St Gregory’s, at All Saints & St James at Nunnington at 11am. There will also be no service at St.Gregory’s on Sunday, November 12. The Remembrance service will be at St Hilda’s, Beadlam, starting at 10.15am.

LASTINGHAM

Lecture and supper - The 14th annual lecture organised by the Friends of Lastingham Church will be given by the Rev Dr Phillip Bradford in St Mary’s Church on Saturday, October 28 at 6pm. He did his graduate studies at York University before coming a lecturer there and this year published the first of a two-volume work on clergy in parliament. The lecture is titled The British Church before St Cedd (620-664) which Christianity in Britain from the time of Christ to the Council of Whitby in 664AD, at which St Cedd was one of the chief translators. Dr Bradford will also be preaching at the Benefice Eucharist in Lastingham at 10.45 on Sunday, October 29. Tickets for the lecture are £8 and £12 to include supper afterward in the village hall. MALTON

Bridge club - Philip Mason and Rob Ashdown were the winners of the first session of Malton Bridge Club’s positional pairs competition. Second place was taken by Tricia Pearce and Stan Bough. Derek Fox and Richard Hilton were third. The championship pairs resumes this week.

Coffee morning - The Malton group of Women’s World Day of Prayer will be holding a coffee morning at St Michael’s Church on Saturday, October 28 from 10am to noon. There will also be cake and bric-a-brac stalls.

MIDDLETON

Lacemakers - Pickering Lacemakers will be holding their monthly meeting in the Middleton village hall, on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

NAWTON

Ceilidh - There will be a ceilidh in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, October 28 from 8pm to 11pm. It is a bring and share supper, so people can feel free to take their own drinks. There will also be a raffle. Music and all dances will be called by Night Owl. Entry is £5 per person. Prize bingo - Harome Bowling Club will hold a prize bingo in Nawton Village Hall on Saturday at 7.30pm.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Social evening - Gordon Clitheroe will present and illustrated talk called The Changing Faces of Pickering in the village hall on Thursday, October 26 at 7.30pm. Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available. Entry is £3.

PICKERING

Bridge - The third session of Pickering Bridge Club’s scratch pairs competition was won by Terence Boyle and June Greener with 59.72 per cent. Joint runners-up were Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall and Robin Ashdown with partner John Bramall with 59.03 per cent.

Family Cinema - The animated film Ballerina was enjoyed at the family cinema at the Methodist Church on Saturday. The next family cinema will be on Saturday, November 11 at 6.30pm when Planes 2. Fire and Rescue will be shown. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Doors open at 6pm and the tuck shop will be open with ice cream and soft drinks also for sale in the interval. Standard bearer - Ken Keld, the secretary of the Pickering branch of the Green Howards Association and chairman of the 2nd Battalion branch was a standard bearer at the naming of a diesel unit named after the Yorkshire Regiment on Saturday, October 7. The diesel unit was named Yorkshire Warrior at a ceremony at York Railway Station and was followed with a buffet.

Gooseberry talk - Ian Woodcock will give an illustrated talk on the history of Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show at an open meeting of Pickering Horticultural Society on Saturday, at the Memorial Hall, at 7pm. Admission will be £2 which will also include refreshments. There will also be a raffle to raise funds for the society.

Shoebox appeal - The annual shoebox appeal has been launched for the Pickering district. Leaflets may be found at Potter Hill Methodist Church, Reeds newsagents and the library. Completed shoeboxes may be left at the Methodist Church or 14 Willow Court, Pickering, the home of organiser Daphne Bowes. Items for the boxes include knitted hats, scarves and gloves. Money towards the transport costs is also needed.

Probus club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, October 10 for lunch at the Forest & Vale Hotel, under the chairmanship of Charles Weston. David Davies spoke, using many photographs, about the harsh economic and winter of 1947. Club membership inquiries can be made by phoning 01751 472879.

Fishkeepers - Members of Ryedale Aquarist Society met at the home of Steven and Sarah Russell when David Marshall presented a talk entitled, Loricarin Catfishes with a Labyrinth Twist. The next meeting will the annual general meeting which will be held in the Mill Suite, Memorial Hall, on Wednesday, November 8 at 7.30pm.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 4, 19 and 1. This week’s draw will be increased to £450. To enter the draw costs £1 per week per entry. To join see any Pikes committee member or call at Dunning Butchers Shop, Bridge Street.

Quiz night - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday, October 29 at 7.30pm.

Kirk Theatre - On Saturday, October 27 there will be bingo evening in aid if the Friends of the Theatre and Pickering Guides. Doors open at 6.30pm with eyes down at 7pm. On Thursday, November 2 there will be a performance by the Thornton-le-Dale Ukeleles at 7.30pm. Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets are available from members of the group or pay on the door on the night. Tickets are now on sale for A Night at the Music Hall which will be presented by Pickering Musical Society on Saturday, November 18 at 7.30pm.

Domino drive - Pickering Cricket Club are holding a domino drive in aid of club funds on Monday, October 30 at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, starting at 7.30pm.

Ryedale Shopper - Next month’s Ryedale Shopper trips are Thursday, November 2 to the York Designer Outlet, price £5; Thursday, November 16 Monks Cross, York, price £5 and Wednesday, November 29 to Northallerton price £6. History day - The Pickering branch of the WEA will present a history day school on the Norman Conquest of Yorkshire with tutor Dr Robert Wright on Saturday, October 28 in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, from 10am to 4pm. There will be a £25 fee.

Tribute night -Tickets are now on sale for tribute night The Great Pretender at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday, November 4 at 7.30pm when Steve Littlewood will perform the songs of Freddie Mercury. Bingo - A prize bingo will be held in Woodlands Community Centre on Wednesday, October 25 in aid of Settrington Bowls Club. Doors open at 6.45pm with eyes down at 7.15pm.

SEAMER

Methodists - The harvest festival service on Sunday was organised by members of the congregation. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman. The welcomer was Bert Blower. Margaret Neave accompanied on the piano and Sheila Gray received the collection. The introduction of hymns and prayers were led by Bob Jackman and during the service he read A Harvest Meditation by Rev Liz Crumlish. Bible readings were given by Bert Blower and Denise Earnshaw, who read from the book of Ruth, and Alan Dunnington, who read from John’s gospel. The church was decorated by Dave, Michael and Tina and a lunch, prepared by Ann and Eileen, was enjoyed after the service. Donations were given for the National Disaster Appeal. The preacher next week at 10.30am is the new minister, Rev Kevin Ridd, and Holy Communion will be observed.

SHERBURN

Letters winner - Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday saw Cresia Ward, of Church View, win £240 with the letters G, H and S. Next week’s prize total will be £60.

Live music - The band Hi Heel Sneakers will be performing 60s and 70s, soul, funk, blues and rock music at the East Riding pub on Saturday.

Community club - There was a full house for the first bingo session of the new season and the Community and Sports Club. A total of £615 was paid out. Further bingo nights will be held on the Saturdays of November 4, December 2 and 16th. Books go on sale at 7.15pm with eyes down at 8pm. The sessions are of people aged 18 years and above. There will be a quiz on Sunday at 8pm when the envelope game will stand at £190. It is £1 per person for entry into the quiz.

Christmas shoeboxes - It is planned to fill the Christmas shoeboxes on Tuesday, October 24 from 1.30pm in the chapel hall. The organisers are looking for items to put in the boxes and include small cuddly toys, which need to have the CE mark, balls, stationery, toiletries like soap, but not liquid, flannels, toothpaste, combs, hair slides, bobbles, skipping ropes and any small toy which is not battery operated or war-related. Messy Church - A light party was held in the Chapel hall to celebrate Jesus Youngsters made lighthouses, light and glittery headbands and bookmarks with Psalm 119 verse 105 written on them. Waving flashing disco sticks, the children went into the darkened church to sing This Little Light of Mine. Prayers were written on cut-out lanterns and hung on a prayer tree. The next Messy Church will be on Saturday, November 11, meeting for tea at 4.45pm.

Methodists - Members of the Fellowship met on Monday at 2pm and enjoyed choosing their favourite choruses which Jean played on the guitar. Bible passages were then shared. Donations for the coffee at the Tuesday coffee morning continue to be given to the Shoebox appeal. Any gifts for the shoeboxes can be left at the Chapel hall. The preacher at Sunday morning worship was Margaret Crofts, assisted with the audio-visual equipment by her husband, Frank. Jean Brown was the door steward and also read a dialogue with Margaret from the Old Testament. The New Testament lesson of the Parable of the Great Feast was read by Liz Aconley. Music was provided by Chris on the organ and Robin on the guitar. Margaret shared some pictures with of a Syrian refugee family that she and Frank had met in Germany and shared a feast with them. Refreshments were enjoyed together in the hall. The worship on Sunday at 10.30am will be an all-age service led by the worship team.

SLINGSBY

Ladies Group - The meeting held on Tuesday, October 10 was attended by 20 members. The speaker, Sue Woodcock, gave a talk on her early years in the police force and her present life as a shepherd. The next meeting will be held in the Methodist hall on Tuesday, November 14 at 7.15pm when the Rev Max Moore will give a talk called My Life in Crime.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - North/South winners at the meeting on Monday, October 9, were Tim Johnson and Enid Watson with 65.4 per cent. In second place with 58.7 were were Margaret Lowe and Isa Eggleston. East/West winners were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 69.6 per cent and in second place with 59.2 per cent were Pat and George Donnor.

WOMBLETON

Remembrance - The Remembrance service, led by the Methodist Minister, will be held in the village hall on Sunday, November 12 at 10.30am.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Saturday, October 28 at 7.30pm to raise funds for the village hall. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits. Another domino drive is planned for Wednesday, November 4.

Jumble sale - Money raised from a jumble sale in the village hall on Saturday, October 28 from 10am to noon will go towards village hall funds.

WI REPORT

Appleton-le-Moors - The branch’s 90th anniversary celebrations continued apace when the Hinderwell Concert Party visited a packed village hall for the September meeting. Many guests and members of other local WIs joined in the fun. It was the second visit of the concert party and again provided a repertoire of songs and amusing poems which had everyone in stitches. Members are now looking forward to the next monthly meeting on the Wednesday, October 25 when Tony Nicholson will return with the third instalment of his series of talks entitled Secrets of the Attic.
