WI REPORT

Thornton-le-Dale - Margaret Smith, the president, welcomed 40 members and guests, including those from Snainton, Middleton and Lockton and Levisham WIs, to the May meeting. Thornton-le-Dale members were reminded about the visit to Duncombe Park in June, the walk, which will take place on Monday, May 23 and to give any suggestions for the 2017 programme. Birthday cards were presented to Lesley Mitchell, Carol Rynehart and Margaret Smith. Volunteers were requested to produce the Tea for Two entry at Ryedale Show at the end of July. Members were given information about some flower arranging sessions to be held in the village prior to the flower festival. It was suggested that Thornton-le-Dale WI form a small choir to enter the Thornton-le-Dale has Talent event to be held in the autumn. Names will be taken shortly for this new venture. The resolutions for the annual meeting were voted on after members were given some information and time to discuss the two issues. The members voted in favour of the resolutions, albeit with some reservations about the practicalities of both issues. David Swann, local musician and songwriter, entertained everyone with some of his most recent songs, including those about the local fishing industry. One song recalled the names scratched on to a mirror in Betty’s Tearoom in York during wartime. After the entertainment, everyone had supper prepared by members, and served by Betty Walker, Valerie Rogers and committee members. There is no meeting in June, but people are welcome to join the branch for the meeting on Tuesday, July 12, when members will learn about some of the costumes held by Scarborough Museums Trust.
