A FORMER homeless hostel in Scarborough will be given a new lease of life.
York Housing Association and Scarborough Borough Council have taken over Newburn House, which has been empty for several years, and will refurbish and develop the building to make six one-bedroom apartments for young people, who will be supported by local charity The Cambridge Centre.
Julia Histon, chief executive of York Housing Association, said: “Scarborough has a real need for high quality affordable housing, particularly for young people, and Newburn House is an ideal property to meet this need.”
“Its use By bringing it back into use, it will not only improve the appearance of the building, but also allow provide young people to with self-contained homes where they can receive appropriate on-site support to give them the best possible start in life.”
Councillor Bill Chatt, Portfolio Holder for Public Health and Housing, said: “Not only will it provide much needed supported affordable housing in the town, but will also bring a long standing empty property back into use. This is a positive result all round and we look forward to the completion of the redevelopment.”
