ALL we seem to hear about is the mistreatment of our elderly when in the care of hospitals, care homes or retirement homes.

Today I heard the results of a survey undertaken on 100 hospitals, many of which are underachieving with their level of care and some – one in five institutions – are actually breaking the law.

If this is the case, what are our councils and Government going to do about it?

I hate to hear people, especially the politicians in Parliament, blaming the previous government for all the problems that exist today. If things go wrong, it is the fault of every single one of our representatives in Parliament. They are all there to represent us and to ensure that these things do not happen.

The opposition is not there only to criticise those in power but also to ensure that things are enacted in the correct fashion. It is the fault of all, not just the party in power.

There are, however, a number of care homes which are fantastic in the care of our elderly and should be held up as a beacon to those which are failing us.

We are very fortunate in having one of many in our own area and I would like to commend the team at 5 Whitby Road for their excellent team under the management of Marian Greenbank.

This is a council-run home for the elderly, where my late mother-in-law resided for a number of years.

Each member of staff make the residents feel wanted, loved and secure. The dignity shown to all is displayed with cheerfulness and all the staff show unlimited gentleness and patience.

We are deeply humbled and thankful for the love and care taken by such a committed team.

They provide the highest standard of care in a warm and friendly family atmosphere.

May we all remember to acknowledge the many excellent homes for the elderly in the Ryedale area.
