Four-month wait for a sharps box collection

Can I add to the debate on changes to the CYC recycling collections. I asked for a free sharps box collection.

Neither of the two local collection sites will touch them; however I can have them collected from my doorstep. The date offered is 20th January 2027. Service?

Long may Foss Islands chimney stand

Many thanks to David Wilson for his excellent double-page spread on the Foss Islands chimney, ‘Morrisons chimney still standing after 127 years’, The Press, September 9.

I refer to this slender elegance in brick as ‘Foss Islands Chimney’ due to living on the Tesco side of town! The much-appreciated industrial survivor is one of my favourite silhouettes on the York skyline.

So glad it wasn’t demolished and still stands proud.

Farewell to Friday nights with Monty

I was so disappointed to learn that Monty Don is retiring. My Friday-night appointment with Monty at Longmeadow has long been one of the highlights of my week for many years.

His appeal was his simplicity and warmth: a relatable gardener trundling his wheelbarrow along the paths, with his friendly dog never far behind. My favourite part was always 'Jobs for the Weekend' - along with his familiar reminder to label everything correctly!

Friday nights simply won’t feel the same without him. Thank you, Monty, for the inspiration, companionship and many happy hours spent in the garden.

A very different reality for the man on the street

Miliband was very quick to say that his parents escaped Europe oppression and that he himself is Jewish.

What he failed to say is that he is an MP and a government minister and entitled to 24 hour protection. Armed if need be.

Bit of a difference between him and the man on the street.

Our national security must come first

The quality of leadership within the Labour party over time has quickly deteriorated; currently we have a Prime Minister whose only interest is himself, together with a buffoon as Foreign Secretary. Little wonder the rest of the world, by the day, treat us with less and less respect.

The defence of one's country has been to be, particularly in an unstable world, the first priority of any Prime Minister. Not so with ours, he finally admits those living off state benefits, with no intention to work but vote Labour, take preference when allocating funds.

An absolute abdication of responsibility purely to satisfy his ideological left wing MPs whose support he needs to retain office. We, the population, outside Westminster are of no concern.
