'Wake up to the dangers of wood burners and ban them'

WITH the arrival of damp autumnal nights, the smell of wood burner stoves is very noticeable when you venture outside.

Although not as strong a smell as the old coal fires, they are still quite pungent in their own way, and with the proven health hazards of pollution from wood burners, in particular fine particle matter, this is quite alarming.

Wood takes up to two years to dry naturally to be sufficiently dried to burn safely (other than kiln dried).

My brother-in-law Tommy recently visited us and told me that in Southern Ireland the sale of wood burners, other than ones specifically built to burn only wood pellets, are soon to be banned.

It's time this country woke up to the dangers of these burners and took action against them.
