A VILLAGE football team has worked its way through the tables to win promotion to a top local division.

Terrington has run a football club since the 1940s but six years ago became known as Terrington Glory.

Since then, the team has won four promotions and transformed itself from a Sunday afternoon pub team to winning a place in the Premier Division of the York Minster Engineering League.

The only drawback is that to comply with FA regulations, the club now has to provide proper changing room facilities at the village hall it uses as a clubhouse.

However, Ian Hughes, from the village hall committee, said it was good news for Terrington.

“This is an amazing achievement for the team and won them the right to play bigger teams including Copmanthorpe, Dringhouses and Railway Athletics,” he said.

“Although it means we have to find funding to provide changing facilities, this will also be a huge boost for the village hall which is used by the village school and other groups including the tennis club – it’s a win-win situation all round.”

Club manager David Bradshaw said the team had originally been set up for a bit of fun but had quickly progressed up through the divisions.

“We are really pleased with our success – I don’t think many people realise quite what we have managed to achieve,” he said.

“It is perhaps a bit daunting moving up to the top division but we’ve nothing to lose.”

David, a hotel porter, said they were applying for grants and had submitted a planning application for the new changing rooms.

“We used to have just one man and his dog coming to watch up but we have more people coming to watch us now,” he said.

“We had one celebration when we knew we had won the division and will be having another one at the end of the season.”

David said the team trained every week and was always on the look out for new players, and added: “Anyone who is over 16 is welcome to come along and have a try out with us.”
