RYEDALE woman Andrea Hustler has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to her community with a Yorkshire Housing Achievement Award.

Andrea, from Duggleby, received an award and a £50 gift voucher after being nominated by Helen Cowton, a community engagement advisor for Yorkshire Housing.

Helen said: “When Andrea moved to Duggleby, she realised that one of the reasons there was anti-social behaviour in the area was because there was nothing for young people to do.

“Working with Yorkshire Housing, Andrea set up an activity group for young people. After four years of hard work, we secured £36,000 of funding from the Big Lottery to create and build a community garden.”

Andrea said: “I've had to do all kinds of things to get this community garden up and running.

“The children have enjoyed being involved. They can’t wait to get on the football pitch; one young lad has even asked for football boots for Christmas. The grass has to grow first, though. It’ll be great when it’s all properly in use.”

The award aims to recognise Yorkshire Housing customers and tenants who make a difference in their community, or who have improved the life of somebody else through their selfless efforts.

The achievement award is just one of the customer awards issued annually and chosen by the Yorkshire Housing readership panel made up entirely of customers.

Mervyn Jones, chief executive at Yorkshire Housing, said: “Andrea has gone the extra mile. Her hard work, commitment and determination to see the project through makes her a welldeserved winner, both for Yorkshire Housing and the community.”
