COUNCILLORS are backing residents living near a play area in Pickering, where teenagers have been causing disturbances as late as 3.30am.

The issue has now been taken up by the town council which is urging action to combat the problem at the Manor Drive play area after householders protested at the council meeting.

One resident said, following the meeting where 14 people complained of the playground being abused: “We remonstrated with the youths but all we get is abuse. We are pleased that it is to be locked each night, which will give the police powers to enforce removal of the youths if they still use it.”

She added: “We are asking parents to take control of their teenagers. It is not fair that we should have to put up with this anti-social behaviour.”

In addition to the gate being locked, the residents have asked for a sign to be put up to warn the teenagers.

Another complaint from the residents is the litter and alcohol being consumed on the site.

Coun Brian Baker said he was to raise the possibility of CCTV cameras being installed and Coun Julie Hepworth praised residents and parents of children for trying to keep the play area clean and free from rubbish.

Councillors at a recent town council meeting were told by one resident: “We are fed up with the noise, trouble and damage.”

Another resident said she had seen 12 youngsters drinking and there had been reports of cars being scratched and tyres let down.
