THE breakaway village show at Newton-upon-Rawcliffe defied heavy rain to go ahead on Saturdy.
Run by the Saltersgate Farmers’ Hunt, the new show resulted from a wrangle involving the long-established Boon Hill Show, due to be held this Saturday.
Janet Marwood, secretary of the hunt show, said: “Although it was a wet day we had a really good turn out.”
Most of the classes focussed on horses and dogs, but organisers hope to expand its range of classes next year.
She said the new show had come about because of a “breakdown” in the show committee. The venue was on land owned by the Holliday family.
Ms Marwood said: “It provided a very scenic space for the many equestrian events and the siting of the marquees.”
Horse showing, jumping and driving classes attracted keen competition, with some classes having up to 30 entries, said Ms Marwood. “The carriage driving was particularly well attended despite the weather.”
There was a poignant reminder of the late John Lightfoot in the craft and produce marquee where articles for an auction were displayed. Pictures that he had owned were donated to the hunt in his memory for fundraising purposes and were later auctioned by well-known local farmer Ronnie Foster.
A former master of the hunt was also remembered with a beautifully engraved silver tray being presented to the champion hound in memory of CynthiaBradley.
Saturday’s Boon Hill Show, which dates back 60 years, will be in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Marie Curie Cancer Care. There will be classes for cookery, photography, ferret and terrier shows and hound trails, as well as showjumping and a pony gymkhana.
