LADY Lumley’s School in Pickering is going global as students link with communities across four different continents as well as closer to home.

Over the coming months pupils will be raising their awareness of different cultures and countries in a series of visits and exchanges.

Students are planning to visit Tanzania, Namibia and Mexico to take part in community projects while 31 pupils will be travelling to Gran Canaria in November to experience life and culture on the Spanish island.

The school’s geography and ICT departments are also working on joint projects with Shenyang Middle School in China, allowing staff and students to work and collaborate on ideas.

Teacher Steve Varey said: “Add to this a plethora of exchange visits to France and Germany as well as trips to Belgium and Italy and it is very plain to see that the world is most definitely your oyster at Lady Lumley’s.

In links closer to home, Ines Jefferies, a Year 6 pupil at Pickering Junior School won £50 of uniform vouchers having completed a global heroes challenge quiz at the Lady Lumley’s open evening.

Mr varey said: “Ines and a group of her classmates will be joining Lady Lumley’s in September 2011, and have also been working on eco-related projects which focused on global and local environmental issues.”

Mr Varey said the importance of global awareness and working to improve the world as a whole were high on the agenda of both schools.
