A GROUP of York students has premiered a short movie at the North York Moors village where the film was shot.

The 27-minute film, The Legend of Beggar’s Bridge, is a period drama based on a 400-year-old folktale, set in Glaisdale, near Whitby. The movie relates how a poor man has a secret relationship with the local squire’s daughter and reveals how the bridge became legendary.

Produced without funding, the film is the first venture for Eboracum Pictures, set up by recent graduates and current students of television and film courses at York, York St John and Teesside universities. Director and producer Andrew Davies has been working on the film since late 2008 and says they have begged, stolen and borrowed to complete the production.

The film is narrated by Coronation Street and Dinnerladies actor Andrew Dunn and the lead role is played by York actor and musician, Andy Curry.

The Legend of Beggar’s Bridge will be entered into film festivals throughout the remainder of 2010.

A DVD release of the film, including a behind-the-scenes documentary, is planned for later in the year.
