ROWERS are aiming to break the world record for the longest distance rowed in 24 hours on a rowing machine.

Julian Norton and Roger Brown are to attempt the feat at Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre gym in aid of the Herriot Hospice Homecare.

The pair hope to beat the current world record for the event which stands at 349km and was set by a German pair this year.

They hope to raise at least £7,000 for the hospice charity in the process.

Mr Norton, of Thirsk, said: “We’re hoping to raise money and to beat the indoor rowing world record.

“It is quite a challenge and it will be hard in the middle of the night when we start to get tired.

“Roger rowed for Britain at the Olympics in Atlanta and Barcelona and I’ve been doing a lot of training for the event.”

Last year Mr Norton beat the British indoor 100,000 metres rowing record in the 30-39-years age group. The challenge takes place from 10am on July 17, to 10am on July 18. To donate towards the challenge visit www.hh24-7.org.uk
