ELECTORS in Ryedale finally go to the polls today, 21 days after the rest of the country voted in the General Election.
Voting in the new Thirsk and Malton constituency was postponed when John Boakes, the original UK Independence Party candidate, died shortly after nominations closed in April. In order to give the party time to nominate a new candidate, polling day was delayed by three weeks. Toby Horton is now standing for UKIP.
Senior politicians from all the main parties have visited the constituency including Harriet Harman, who was in the area yesterday. She was supporting her party’s candidate Jonathan Roberts. Conservative candidate Anne McIntosh is seeking re-election. Until April, she represented the former Vale of York constituency. Miss McIntosh is one of two candidates who would join the Government’s coalition if elected. The other is Liberal Democrat candidate Howard Keal. John Clark is standing for the Liberal Party.
