ONE motorcylist was killed and another seriously injured over the bank holiday weekend.

The motorcyclist who died was killed in a crash on the A171 near Whitby and the second biker was seriously injured on the A64 near York on Sunday night.

The motorcyclist killed on the A171 Scarborough to Whitby Road has been named as Martin David Pearson, from the Lealholm area of Whitby.

He had been riding a blue and white Suzuki motorbike at 5.40pm on Friday when he collided head-on with a green Peugeot 206. All three occupants of the car, who were from the Stockton area, were treated for minor injuries at Scarborough General Hospital.

Anyone who witnessed the accident should contact TC Dan Hughes on (01723) 509555.

The motorcyclist involved in the A64 accident was said to be in a serious condition in York Hospital. The man, who is believed to be from the Scunthorpe area, was riding a blue Yamaha R6, on the A64 towards York near to the Strensall crossroads, just after 7.30pm, when he was in collision with a black Honda Civic car turning right near to Thompson's fish and chip shop.

Police are appealing for witnesses and would also like to hear from anyone who saw a blue Yamaha motorcycle travelling on the A64 from Scarborough, possible in company with another blue Yamaha.

The driver of the Honda Civic is thought to be from the Worksop area. Anyone with information should contact TC Chris Redin on (01904) 669884.

North Yorkshire Police stopped 120 motorcyclists in the Dales area of the county over the weekend, with some riders facing court action for speeding. Force press officer Ron Johnson said 47 fixed penalties were issued, mainly for illegal exhausts and modified registration plates.

Officers caught one biker travelling at 103mph and another at 98mph with no insurance. A fixed penalty ticket went to one individual for failing to wear a helmet.

Meanwhile, police are appealing for witnesses to a two-car crash in North Yorkshire that saw one vehicle overturn and another flee the scene.

The driver of a blue Honda Accord had a lucky escape after his car was in collision with a silver Vauxhall Senator before leaving the road and rolling onto its roof.

Police said the Accord driver, James Burton, 60, of Ampleforth, was not injured in the crash, which happened on the unclassified road between Castle Howard and Slingsby. But officers now want to speak to the middle-aged couple in the Vauxhall who drove away without leaving details.

The crash happened at about 5pm on Thursday about a quarter of a mile from the Slingsby side of the Coneysthorpe junction. The Honda was driving towards Castle Howard, while the Vauxhall was heading in the opposite direction. Witnesses should call PC Paul Merritt on (01723) 500300.
