NORTON councillor David Jackson has died in Malton Hospital at the age of 68 after a long battle against cancer.
He was an independent member of Ryedale District Council since 2004 and a long-serving member of Norton Town Council.
Born at Wilton, near Pickering, Coun Jackson, pictured, worked for a car components company in York for 25 years, where he became an inspector of car shock absorbers.
He was well-known in Norton and throughout Ryedale for his work with St John Ambulance, in which he was a sergeant and was in charge of the brigade’s ambulance. He was also a member of the St John Fellowship and was made a Serving Brother of the Order of St John.
“David attended many events and shows throughout Ryedale with St John’s,” said his wife, Valerie. “He would do anything for anyone and was well respected in Norton.”
Coun Jackson was secretary and treasurer of the Norton Old Age Citiizens’ Christmas party.
He was a keen gardener and had four allotments. He grew vegetables and flowers, which he sold at local car boot sales.
Coun Robert Wainwright, leader of the Independent Group on Ryedale District Council, said: “David was a much-respected and conscientious councillor who worked hard for the people of Norton.”
Coun Keith Mennell, former Town Mayor of Norton, said: “He was very supportive of the council and helpful to people. Our sympathy goes out to David’s family and friends.”
