THE landlord of the flats has vowed to create a permanent memorial to the jockeys when the complex is rebuilt.

Alan Foster who lives in a neighbouring cottage, said he would consider renaming Buckrose Court after Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson.

“I would have to talk to their families but I feel something needs to be done, either renaming the flats or having a plaque on the wall in memory of them.”

Mr Foster, who has owned the complex since 1998, has been left devastated by the blaze.

“I’ve spent three years renovating the building and in 20 minutes it has all been ruined,” he said.

“It is so traumatic going back and seeing all the debris and damage, it’s soul destroying.”

Mr Foster had been woken on the night of the fire by the smoke alarms.

“I looked out of my window and saw a lad lying in the middle on the concrete covered in blood and lots of black smoke coming out of the flats.

“I rang 999 but the emergency services were already on their way.”

He described Jamie as “one of the nicest people you could meet”.

“I never had any problems with him, he was always well-mannered and respectful, he didn’t deserve any of this.”

Mr Foster is now staying in a guest house in Scarborough while the police and fire services complete their investigation into the blaze.

“So far I haven’t even been allowed back into my own house which wasn’t affected by the fire, the police have been getting my stuff out for me.”

He said of the nine flats in the complex, six had been damaged.

The tenants are now staying with relatives and friends at various locations, but Mr Foster said he would make 12 rooms available for them in the adjourning Buckrose House.

“At the moment I am talking to my insurers, but I aim to rebuild the flats and make them even better,” he added.

“All the flats had smoke alarms but we didn’t put sprinklers in because it wasn’t a requirement, however they are going in this time even if I have to pay for it myself.”
