A SPECIALIST sports college has appealed to local businesses to donate money towards replacing two of its ageing minibuses.

Lady Lumley’s School, in Pickering, says the vehicles must be replaced if it is to continue providing the extensive range of off-site curricula and extra-curricula activities from which its students currently benefit.

Headteacher Richard Bramley said: “Unfortunately, after 17 and ten years respectively, two of the school’s minibuses are now showing their age and vehicle bodywork is deteriorating rapidly. Both required major repairs to get them through the last MOT.”

The school can apply for £25,000 from the Government to replace the minibuses – but only if match funding can be found, £10,000 of which must come from the private sector. Mr Bramley said: “Everyone recognises the difficulties facing businesses throughout the country and it is not the ideal time to be asking for financial assistance, but we have no control over timing. If we can raise £10,000 by August we can secure total funding of £50,000. Any contribution towards our £10,000 target, no matter how small, would be of immense value to us.”

He said trips, visits and activities were an indispensable part of a broad and balanced curriculum and a vibrant part of the school.

“They are an opportunity to extend students’ learning and enrich their appreciation and understanding of themselves, others and the world around them. They can be the catalyst for improved academic performance, a lifetime interest or, in some cases, professional fulfilment. Educational trips, therefore, are to be encouraged and the availability of in-house transport is an essential pre-requisite.

“Anyone who feels able to offer financial support you will be investing in the local community, the future workforce of the area and you will be associated with a well-respected and successful school.”
