PLANS have been put forward to host Yorkshire Day in Ryedale next year.
Every year on August 1, towns, cities and villages in the region celebrate the unique traditions, dialects and customs of the area.
In 2009, Ryedale landed the opportunity to host the prestigious event, which would cost more than £15,000.
The first ever Yorkshire Day was held in Beverley in 1974, in opposition to the local government re-organisation of the time. Chief executive Janet Waggott said: “This is something I will continue discussions with the Yorkshire Society. There are provisions within our budget to host the celebrations in Ryedale.”
Backing the move, leader of the council Keith Knaggs said: “This would be a fantastic opportunity to bring even more visitors to the district. I have a feeling in 2009 we will need all the tourists we can get.”
