SPEED limits of 20mph are set to be brought in on York roads suffering from parking and driving problems near a school.

City of York Council officials have approved a 20mph limit in Acomb's Millfield Lane and Low Poppleton Lane.

A council report on the decision stated traffic in the roads was at times overwhelming and posed a risk to a large amount of pupils going to and from Manor CE Academy.

Officials added the changes also followed complaints about inconsiderate driving and parking which was endangering people trying to cross the road.

The moves come as part of the council's Safer Route to School initiative.

The 20mph limits are set to be brought in in Millfield Lane from just south of the school and on Low Poppleton Lane to the junction with Boroughbridge Road and Beckfield Lane.

Council officers said: “As with most schools, large volumes of pupils arrive and leave in a short space of time, and the existing facilities can sometimes be overwhelmed placing children at risk of conflict with vehicles.

“Millfield Lane is largely industrial with numerous commercial vehicles regularly passing the frontage of the school.

“This scheme aims to address concerns relating to inconsiderate driving and parking, which endangers other road users and reduces visibility where pupils are trying to cross.

“Improvements to the road layout are mainly focussed outside the school frontage.”
