More than £18.7 million will be invested in community infrastructure as part of the Monks Cross Garden Village development.

The funding, which includes support for transport, education, and community infrastructure, will help shape the new neighbourhood taking shape in Huntington on the outskirts of York.

The garden village will include 970 homes, a primary school, a community hub, sports pitches, retail space, and a country park.

John Handley, managing director of Redrow Yorkshire, said: "We know residents have seen roadworks and infrastructure works taking place in recent months and understandably people want to know what these improvements are being delivered for.

"Monks Cross Garden Village will create much more than new homes.

"It will bring investment in schools, public transport, walking and cycling routes, community facilities and green spaces that can be enjoyed by people living across the local area.

"As the development progresses, residents will start to see these benefits take shape, from the proposed primary school and community hub through to the new country park and recreational facilities."

Of the total funding, more than £15 million will go towards primary, secondary, early years, and special educational needs facilities.

Redrow will also gift land to the local authority for a proposed primary school.

A further £3.7 million will be allocated to improvements in bus services, highways, cycling infrastructure, and other sustainable transport measures.

The scheme is designed around garden village principles, placing green infrastructure at the core of the masterplan.

A country park will be created to the east of the site, offering open space for recreation, walking, and nature.

Landscaped public areas, tree-lined streets, and dedicated walking and cycling routes will connect neighbourhoods throughout the site.

A community hub with retail amenities is proposed for the centre of the development.

Redrow has submitted a reserved matters application for this central parcel, which will also include homes by Barratt and David Wilson Homes.

Construction is already underway on the first phase, Monks Cross Village Gardens, where Redrow is building 314 homes.

Of these, 30 per cent will be affordable housing, with self-build and custom-build plots also available.

In addition to the developer contributions, Redrow Yorkshire has made a voluntary £7,000 donation to The Land Haxby, a community interest company.

The organisation supports autistic children, young people and their families through a tranquil natural environment designed to reduce anxiety, combat social isolation and promote wellbeing.

Vanessa Beckett, land manager at The Land Haxby, said: "We are incredibly grateful to Redrow for the generous donation and for recognising the work we do within our community."

Mr Handley said the company was committed to supporting both new and existing communities.

He said: "The work carried out by The Land Haxby makes a genuine difference to local families and we're proud to support a project that promotes inclusion, wellbeing and access to nature."
